We never know in looking at a face, passing a stranger or sitting across from a passenger on a bus what that person has endured, how many miles they’ve had to travel to get to where they are or what suffering they’ve seen in their life.

Wow, what a powerful story in so many ways. Thank you so much Brad! At first when I was reading, I felt jealous. Jealous of this miraculous human moment - the one where you make a profound connection with someone, totally unexpectedly, and it feels like magic - as these are my favorite moments in life and what fulfill me. The story is so moving and really reached my heart. I think the fact that you started a conversation with your driver, and that you and your family were open to listening to him share, is a powerful reminder in itself. That when we are curious and present, the possibilities for connection are vast. It's amazing that he shared this with you and I bet this connection means as much to him as it does to you. Being a witness to someone else's story is just as powerful as telling it. (And telling it is an incredible gift too!) And this part: "Moments when we remember something simple: The horse still knows the way." - I feel that so deeply. I really needed to hear that in this moment. And it's such a profound reflection. That we're not in this alone, we don't have to know all the answers or see the path forward. That we can trust something deeper is helping us to continue on. I'm moving my family to Leiden in one week. New country, new language, new life.
A little less than a year ago we sold everything and moved to Europe. The business is growing. The marriage is rebuilding. The ground underneath everything still feels very uncertain.
And I keep thinking about that boy on the horse in the dark. No guide. No guarantee. Just the instruction to trust something he couldn't yet see.
That's where I am. On the horse. In the dark. I don't know if the horse knows the way. But I'm getting on anyway. Thank you for this.
